About & Bio
Sofiene Mamdi is a French Tunisian film director and screenwriter based in Paris, working across Europe, the MENA region, and beyond.
Born and raised in Tunis, he began his artistic journey as an actor, appearing in acclaimed television productions and films that screened at theaters & prestigious international festivals. His early experience on set refined his instinct for performance and emotion — grounding his directing in precision, rhythm, and human truth.
His cinema examines moral tension, identity, and survival in contemporary society — merging the intensity of genre with the depth of psychological realism. Each of his films balances atmosphere and empathy, revealing characters caught between chaos and redemption.
Mamdi made his feature debut with Spiral (2021), a psychological drama that premiered theatrically and earned awards and selections at major international festivals across Los Angeles, Tokyo, Rome, Mexico, Caorle, Bangkok, Oslo... The film established him as a distinctive voice in Arab–European cinema — one unafraid to explore darkness and catharsis with sensitivity and precision.
In 2024, he released Assemblage, a real-time crime thriller shot in a single continuous take. The film was recognized as the longest one-take feature in French cinema history and the longest ever directed by an Arab or African filmmaker.
Set in multicultural Paris, Assemblage unfolds over 92 uninterrupted minutes, immersing viewers in an unbroken flow of tension and motion.
Première described it as “a cinematic gesture that bursts through the screen,” while Télérama hailed it as “an impressive feat.” Following wide theatrical releases in France and Tunisia, Assemblage launched globally on Amazon Prime Video, confirming Mamdi’s position as one of the most daring and innovative directors of his generation.
Across his body of work, Mamdi constructs worlds that move with relentless energy — morally complex, visually meticulous, and emotionally raw. His cinema speaks a universal language: visceral, magnetic, and profoundly human.
